How to choose the perfect tv size for any room

Size Matters (most)—Nobody comes in to buy a smaller TV than the one that they currently have, and the number one reason that people exchange their TV under our 15 day “love it or exchange it” guarantee is that they bought a TV that wasn’t big enough.

As TVs have gotten thinner and the bezel/frames have gotten smaller (almost non-existent) the physical presence of the TV in the room is much less than even flat screen TVs of just three or four years ago, and certainly much less than rear projection TVs.

Also, as the picture quality continues to improve, you can (and will want to) sit much closer to your TV as it will neither feel overwhelming nor will you be able to spot imperfections in the picture.

The rule of thumb for screen size on a new 4K TV is you want to sit at a distance of 1.5x the size of the screen. For instance, if you have a 60” TV, 1.5x the size is 90”, so you’ll want to be about 90” away from the TV.

How to choose the perfect tv size

Older 1080p/720p/1080i TVs had recommended viewing distances of 2 to 2.5x the screen size.  With 4K, you can, and will want to, sit much closer. Bigger is better!

So, while an 82” TV might sound HUGE, the recommended viewing distance for an 82” 4K TV is just over ten feet, which isn’t that far away.

Plus, because no longer are there big frames around the newer TVs, the size of an 82” TV isn’t much larger than the 65” TVs of yesteryear.
