Do I Need a Soundbar with My TV? Yes — Here's Why (and Which One to Get)

If you just bought a new TV and someone told you that you need a soundbar to go with it, you might be skeptical. Your old TV sounded fine. Why would a brand-new, expensive TV need a separate speaker?

Here's the answer — and once you understand it, it makes complete sense.

Why modern flat-screen TVs have poor built-in sound

Your old TV sounded decent because it had physical space for speakers. Older sets had a bezel below the screen, or depth on the sides, where actual speaker drivers could sit and fire sound forward, toward you.

Today's TVs have virtually no bezel. The screen goes right to the edge — which is beautiful to look at, but it means there's nowhere to put decent speakers. The speakers in a modern flat-screen TV are tiny, thin, and forced to fire out the back of the set, directly into the wall it's mounted on. The sound bounces back into the room, muffled and flat.

To make it worse, professional audio is recorded in 5 separate channels. Most flat-screen TVs have just two tiny speakers trying to reproduce all of that. The result is that dialogue — the thing you're listening to most — gets compressed and muddy. If you've ever turned your TV up loud and still struggled to hear what people are saying, this is why.

A soundbar fixes all of this. It puts proper speaker drivers in front of you, firing toward you, with dedicated channels for dialogue clarity, and typically a wireless subwoofer that handles the deep bass your TV physically cannot produce.

Why a Samsung soundbar is the best match for a Samsung TV

You can technically use any soundbar with a Samsung TV. But if you want the best performance and the most seamless experience, a Samsung soundbar unlocks a feature called Q-Symphony that nothing else can.

Most soundbar setups work by replacing your TV's built-in speakers — the TV goes silent and the soundbar takes over. Q-Symphony does something different: it makes your TV's speakers and the soundbar work together simultaneously, producing fuller, more enveloping sound from more directions. It's a genuinely noticeable difference, especially for music, sports, and action scenes.

Which Samsung soundbar is right for you?

The right choice depends on your room size and how immersive you want the experience to be.

For the ultimate home theater experience, the Samsung HW-Q990F delivers 11.1.4-channel sound with wireless rear speakers, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X. It creates true surround sound without running wires across your room — the rear speakers connect wirelessly to the soundbar. This is the one for dedicated home theater setups or anyone who wants cinema-quality audio at home.

For serious performance without rear speakers, the Samsung HW-Q900F is a 7.1.2-channel soundbar with Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony. It produces layered, multidimensional sound from a single unit sitting below your TV — no rear speakers needed. A great choice for living rooms where you want a major upgrade without the complexity of a full surround setup.

For a more compact or budget-conscious option, the Samsung HW-Q800F is a 5.1.2-channel soundbar that still supports Dolby Atmos, Q-Symphony, and Adaptive Sound. It's slim, capable, and a significant step up from built-in TV audio — ideal for bedrooms, smaller living rooms, or anyone taking their first step into quality audio.

What about budget soundbars?

Be cautious of inexpensive soundbars. Many of them will simply make your TV louder — but not clearer. A good soundbar improves dialogue clarity, adds depth to music, and makes everything from a movie to a football game more immersive. Cheap soundbars often do none of that well. If you're going to spend money on a great TV, it's worth pairing it with audio that matches it.

Hear it before you buy

The best way to understand what a soundbar actually does is to hear it in person, side by side with TV-only audio. We have Samsung soundbars set up and demonstrating in all of our showrooms across Maryland and Virginia. Come in, and we'll let you hear the difference for yourself — on the same content, through the same TV — before you spend a dollar.

We also regularly offer TV and soundbar bundle pricing that beats buying them separately, and often beats what you'd find at Amazon, Costco, or Best Buy.
